20/09/09 Official QSL Awards 2009
Oh, the irony of it all. As the unofficial site, we're entitled to our opinion and we rarely invoke it...we're about positivity not criticism. Nonetheless, the time has come...we totally disagree with the QSL awards for 2009. All of 'em...
Tyson Holmes was not the best and fairest player in the QSL, Matt Acton was not the best goalkeeper and George Koroma was not the rookie of the year...none of them were even the best player at their respective clubs. The greatest irony of course is that Steven Cater is probably gonna win rookie of the year at FNQ and must even be a shot at winning best and fairest for the Bulls.
Of the top of our respective heads, we reckon that Morley, Musson, Smith, Collins, Butters, Oar, Hagell, Seo, Woodruffe, Fyfe, Byrne, Knipe, Buess, Stenhouse, Madrid, Fraser, McVey, Gilfillan, Cater and Gong were better than Holmes...Homes is a fantastic player with trememdous natural ability but he didn't have a great year by his standards.
We're not sure about the criteria for these awards...whatever they are seems a little dodgy.

10/09/09 All The News And Some Big Awards
yourQSL Player Of The Year: Luke Morley (Strikers)
Morley has attacked, defended, created and distributed better than any other player in the QSL. He's a midfielder and a forward in the same package. His aerial skills are impeccable and he's deadly in front of goal. In a talented line-up he's been the best...which leads us to...
Runner-up: Matt Smith (Strikers)
The heart of the backline is a tough place to ply your trade in the QSL and Smith has been the springboard for the Strikers impressive array of attacking weapons. He's been dogged and determined like a good fullback should be but it's his decision making which has put him a cut above the rest. Captaincy sits well with him...
Teenager Of The Year: Steven Cater (FNQ) and Rhys Jackson (Logan)
Yep...we couldn't split 'em after hours and hours of soul-searching so we're giving it to both of them. Obviously both players have excelled in the QSL but we've given them the award for vastly different reasons...sort of. In third place was half of the QAS side...
Cater: He's been a shining light in front of goal this season. Eleven goals gave him the Bulls Golden Boot and left him in fifth spot for the season overall. He's been an ever-present in the first team and, more importantly, he's become the Bulls "go-to man," combining briliantly at times with Josiah Rusch. There's no reason why Cater can't be the first young QSL player to go on to bigger and better things from outside the Brisbane Metropolitan area.
Jackson: He started in the Under21's and fought his way into the first team despite being seventh or eighth in the pecking order for a place in Logan's midfield and it's no coincidence that their season took a turn for the better when his hard-tackling combination with Josh Filewood found form. Jackson's three goals late in the season were the mark of a genuine talent. And he's only sixteen...
07/09/09 Redlands Wonderful Victory Through The Eyes Of Brian Monroe
06/09/09 Byrne And O'Brien Combine To Send Redlands Into The Big One.
A crisp second half finish from ex-Olympic player Danny Byrne and a wonderful penalty save from Mitch O'Brien were enough to ensure that Redlands last game in the QSL will be in the Grand Final.
In a game that never really reached any great heights as a spectacle, Redlands started slowly but rebounded on the back of a sterling midfield performance from Scotsman Graham Fyfe and were arguably worthy winners on the night.
Both the QSL and Under21 grand finals will now be contested between the Devils and the Strikers which is a fabulous achievement for the Bayside outfit and we heartily applaud them.
Olympic completed the slow choking process which commenced in round 18 with the home loss to the Strikers and it doesn't make good reading. Eights point clear was transformed into runner-up by four points in the blink of an eye through losses to the Strikers (twice,) Logan, Sunshine Coast and Redlands...only the shaky round nineteen win against Capricorn stopped their entire back end of the season from being full armageddon.
A lot of players who took the field tonight won't be wearing red and white next year...or so we reckon.
06/09/09 Crunch Time Arrives For Devils and the Grecians
We've been out to Goodwin park this morning and the stage is set for the red and white showdown at Goodwin Park this afternoon between Olympic and Redlands. Considering the incredible average of 4.1 goals per game in this season's QSL, we're going to predict another goalfest and we're also going to predict a lot of them will come from Olympic who have been out of form and will need to put in an improved performance. We reckon Redlands were darn tooting lucky to scrape past the Fire last week.
The verdict: Olympic 4-2.
30/08/09 No Away Strips Needed For the Grand Final At Perry Park
- Redlands are through to play Olympic next week for the right to play the Strikers in the Grand Final at Perry Park. With the demise of the Fire and their yellow strip we will now have a Grand Final between a red team and a yellow team which avoids the stupid idea of every club wearing a white away strip which is compulsory in the A-League and starting to take over everywhere else...who cares? Oympic should REALLY be wearing blue but that's another story...
- Au revoir to the boys from Kawana...if you hadn't started so badly we reckon you'd be playing next week at the very least and you'd be our number one choice if we had to suggest a potentially successful franchise to represent Queensland in an A-League Division 2.
30/08/09 More 2009 Awards
Goalkeeper Of The Year: Seb Usai (Logan United)
By necessity, for a goalkeeper to shine, he'll most probably be getting quite a bit of work which is one of the criteria to select our two best for the season. Seb Usai had a major impact on Logan United's ultimately fruitless late-season tilt at making the semi-finals with memorable performances against the Strikers and Redlands. In 2008, the potential was there for all to see and now that Usai has eradicated the occasional error from his game he has become the shot-stopper par excellence particularly when saving at the feet of oncoming attackers. Time for the next step we reckon...
Runner-up: Brad Moss (Whitsunday Miners)
Brad Moss doesn't look like your typical modern goalkeeper...he's not 7'6" for one thing...but he makes up for it with agility, athleticism and bravery as well as a good eye for distribution. The Miners underperformance in 2009 can in no way be laid at the feet of their keeper who must be guaranteed his position for next season.
30/08/09 Olympic Defence Evenly Spread By Butters
Brisbane Strikers took a giant step towards redeeming their Grand Final loss of last year with an amazing late, late extra-time goal from Michael Butters, following on from an injury time equaliser by Adam Webber.
When Alex Panic put Olympic up 2-0 in the 46th minute, general consensus was that the game was a total load of crap but Michael Butters had been outstanding. How prescient this was to be.
After 70 minutes the Strikers remembered they were allowed to attack down the flanks if they felt like it and the floodgates opened. It could easily have been more but in dramatic style the Strikers found the net in the 72nd, 90+3rd (?) and 117th minute triggering massive celebrations in the home end.
On a negative note, the police were called to deal with a couple of trouble-makers. We like to keep this website family friendly so we'll just say nothing...

Referee Of The Year: Marty Krenes
We’re loathe to criticise referees because it’s A REALLY HARD JOB. We’ve tried and failed dismally and QSL is way tougher than Rooball. We like the way that Marty makes instant decisions and we like the way that he relates to the players with respect.
Runner-up: Jacqui Melksham
All the referees have done a good job this season and we could easily have put “Everyone Except Marty” in this category but we’re gonna go with Jacqui because we’re mighty impressed with her selection to referee at the U/19 Women’s World Cup. Congratulations from all here in the offices.

Disappointment Of The Year: Bundaberg Spirit
The Spirit have frankly been cannon-fodder all year. A minus 81 goal difference on the back of regular losses by up to ten goals is just not good enough. The loss of Andy Wood didn't help the cause but it was all academic by then anyway. The rum city has a long tradition associated with football in Queensland and this factor has left all of us here scratching our heads looking for the reason for the fall from grace. Next year the Spirit must improve and there's plenty of reasons why they will. Elliott Causer, Brett Kitching and Arian Dubroy have enough talent to cement the foundations of a competitive side and the support from the local community is enough to make the semi-finallists as green as a Fury jersey with envy considering the final round dead rubber against Logan attracted more punters through the gate than yourQSL has seen at Perry Park, Goodwin Park, Stockland Park or Cleveland Showgrounds all season. It's all been a bad dream but the Spirit know that they were a better side in Round 20 than they were in Round 1 and have plenty of reasons to be optimistic about the season ahead.
Runner-up: Odd Refereeing Decisions.
Odd is the crucial word in this. Referees make instantaneous decisions and only 50% of fans are gonna be in agreeance with the tough ones. We don't care about that and reckon that QSL referees make the correct ruling more often than not, but we've seen some strange decisions which look fundamentally silly to the hardcore football fans that follow the QSL and reduce the credibility of the officialdom. To progress to the top level the "Laws Of Association Football" need to be read and understood in their entirety.
- It's such a beautiful day, we've moved the yourQSL laptop out by the barbecue and the lorikeets are squawking in the Grevilleas overhead...ahhh, yourQSL: putting the QUEENSLAND into Queensland State League...
- Semi-finals have been confirmed and we'll be sending correspondents to Perry Park next Saturday at 7pm for the Strikers vs Olympic clash before packing up all the gear and dragging our hungover crew to Stockland Park for the Sunshine Coast vs Redlands game. Dare we say it...anyone can win the league from here. The Strikers and the Fire have been running like a well-oiled machine whilst Olympic and Redlands have been missing on a couple of cylinders but this is semi-final knockout over one leg, as is the Australian way. We are one, we are many...
- Olympic and Redlands won't be a part of the QSL in 2010 and it's a dang shame. Both sides have been super-competitive in 2009 and have provided us with some scintillating action on the field. They'll both be sorely missed. Best of luck goes out to Football Brisbane in their quest to re-enter both sides in the BPL without getting up anyone's nose...
21/08/09 It's That Time Of The Year
- We're back, at exactly the right time of the year, and we've got oodles of awards, season reviews and opinionated rubbish coming up. With the help of Paul Van Dyke and our innocent, conservatively dreesed virgin of a big sister at yourBPL, we'll be letting you all vote in our first annual Televised Goal Of The Year competition. We're all so excited here in the nerve centre that we've been forced to remove the coffee machine from the canteen...
